Better remove me, too. Debian on my netbook (for variety's sake), and still dual-booting with XP Pro ( ) on my laptop.
:)

Again, the poll doesnt care if you are using every Linux distribution or OS under sun if its not related to Slackware. So as far as the poll is concerned you are a Slackware-only user.

At the moment I only use slackware

Yeah, I know. I said more or less the same thing earlier on.

This poll's only asking if you use any Slackware derivatives, not other OSs or distros. :tisk: :)

Again it does not make sense to run the poll this way. Classifying someone as a Slackware only user when he most likely has another distribution that he uses is a false classification. The last option, "I am a Slackware user and i also use another derivative not listed above" is covered by one of the first two options: "I am a Slackware user and i also have a Slackware derivative installation", "I am a Slackware user and i use a Slackware derivative as a live medium".

So as well as cleaning that up, the poll should have the following three options:
* I am a Slackware user and i also have a non-Slackware based linux installation
* I am a Slackware user and i also have a non-Slackware based linux as a live medium
* I am a Slackware user only

No, it's all about derivatives. As the name of the poll says:
Are you using any Slackware derivative distributions?

Didier Spaier 06-16-2011 05:05 PM

Slackware only

gauchao 06-16-2011 05:32 PM

No, only the original Slackware.

linus72 06-16-2011 05:40 PM

I use Slackware and make my own Slackware derivatives using Linux-Live
My Slackware derivative is PocketWriter OS, which used to be based off Slackware -current, but is now based off of Salix 13.1
http://multidistro.com/

and if anyone wishes to make their own live Slackware derivative, let me know:)

I would really like to know how to do that and I think that this will be handy for others, too.
May be you can write a HowTo for the tutorials section of LQ.

I do have an older thread here
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...system-806373/

but am now up to 2.6.38.8 kernel

Problem is that the Linux-Live has been modified several times from kernel 2.6.33.4 to 2.6.38.8 due to newer aufs2 and squashfs-lzma patches, etc.
While most distros still use .lzm or lzma compression, the newest made by skyhog99 use xz compression ( .xzm ) which only works with 2.6.38+

The process is pretty easy and you only need a few things to do this.

I will try this weekend to write a proper tutorial:)

Thanks, I am looking forward to that.

I occasionally use both Wolvix and BlueWhite64 which are Slackware derivatives. I sure hope they get updated soon. They are both excellent distros and well worth supporting.

Not so surprising that the majority here run only the one true Slack. This is after all the Slackware forum but it is interesting that Salix is starting to look like the most popular derivative amongst Slackware users, given that they are one of the youngest. It would seem like they are having some success their strategy of not deviating too much.

P.S. Personally I don't have any Slackware derivative installed right now but I still voted for Salix because I have used it in the past, have a LiveCD to hand and take a few apps from their repository. I have also started to contribute by maintaining the Opera package for them.

Polls are always fun even if the question may be somewhat misleading.

I started off with Slackware. Then I tried Absolute on VBox and I was disappointed. I tried Zenwalk and I found it interesting but I preferred Slackware. BTW the Zenwalk artwork is awesome, but I found it more difficult to hack as I did not always find the SlackBuilds or source. Still Zenwalk is a solid distribution like Slackware.

I loved SLAX and I am in process of having a good look on Porteus. The latter is very promising.

I admire the Salix devs because they contribute back to SBo. It is good to see some synergy.

It is unlikely that I give up Slackware for its derivative.

I run Slackware only; Does the job, is stable and provides me with all the controll of the machine, rather than the other way around. I love it and won't want anything else.
