could not find filesystem /dev/root redhat

Hi folks,
I am running redhat 5 enterprise, and had to take a hard disk out of the server and put it into another machine. When booting I get the message

"could not find filesystem /dev/root redhat"

+ a kernel panic.

I need to run a recovery disk, but as RedHat 5 is no longer supported, will running a RedHat 6 or 7 installation allow me to repair this version and continue running version 5?

Thanks in advance.

So long as it's the same architecture (32-bit or 64-bit) you should be ok.
If the disk/system is ok, you should be able to chroot into it from anything to do the fix - probably start by rebuilding the initrd.

I will not recommend to use rescue disk from other version/distribution.
RH5 still available for download, probably not for guest user.
Use exact same MAJOR version rescue disk with MINOR version higher than yours, i.e. RH-5.11 is good.

Your problem is about drivers for accessing root disk. So, boot in rescue, chroot in your OS.
Fix /etc/modprobe.conf to include correct drivers (cheaters will check already running OS on same hardware) and rebuild initrd.
