"smart" or "default" upgrade from 3.3.0 to 3.3.1?
How did 'the rest of you' upgrade from 3.3.0 to 3.3.1. Did you do a Synaptic 'smart' upgrade (equates to a 'dist-upgrade' in apt-get) or did you do a 'default' upgrade? Seems to be some confusion in the other Mepis boards so I thought I'd toss it out here to see what has worked for others.
I've got about 30 pgms and libs being held back by Synaptic and wonder if it is safe to do the 'smart upgrade.' Thanks, ANC |
Ive talked with LordDavon about this in the past, the official policy is to not do any upgrading outside of the single MEPIS repo. However, should you wish to you can do either type of upgrade. You are not promised all programs will work if you do upgrades.

I guess the Mepis folks don't want us to ugrade since they 'turned off' the Debian repos in the apt-get .list and that what you are telling us is 'upgrade at your own risk.' Al C. |
no there wont be a mepis specific set of packages that debian packages, however, you are everything is supposed to work 'out of the box' if you upgrade you take it into your own hands and he cant be held responsible when stuff breaks. btw, nothing is terribly worng with smart upgrades if your familiar with apt and know how to fix problems with it

It is not just a Mepis problem. Anyone using a distro that is heavily dependant on Debian (as you know Mepis is 90%+ debian and it wants to stay that way - unlike Ubuntu with its own packages) will just have to be patient when it comes to upgrading at the moment until Debian gets things sorted out. Mepis 3.4 is supposed to be the one with "major" changes, ie KDE 3.4, possibly xorg, blah blah blah. Relax - why hurry to download such minor changes and possibly (the key word here) mess up your system. Why not mess around with the kanotix distro to see various changes? I've done a little bit, knowing I'm safe leaving my Mepis 3.3 well alone. Edit: See this official announcement here: http://www.mepis.org/node/6500 Are you are suspicious that there will be problems upgrading from 3.3 to 3.4? |

This much I know. I won't be the first guy to move from 3.3.x to 3.4.x. I'll let some of you folks be the pioneers. Besides I tried the Kanotix CD with KDE 3.4 and I didn't see anything in there that I want or need or must have. Al |
Take a look here http://www.mepislovers.org/modules/n...=5518&forum=6, I use this and have had no problems.

In my case i did a clean install of 3.3.1, no big deal. There really is no compelling reason to upgrade, i just did it for something to do one
