Lost Newbie

Hi guys,

I just installed Mandrake 9.2

When I select "linux" at the boot start, it starts loading and then it goes into this REALLY long procedure of linsting al kinds of stuff (sorry, wish I had a more technical description for you ;)) and reboots at the end...

Then it goe and does the same thing again, so I never get to run the OS

Anyone?

Tnx,
Maqueo

please tell us what the "end" actually is. if somethign is triggering it to reboot we need to know what it is... do you get as far as the graphical login? if so try editing your boot options and add "3" to the line, this will then not load the graphical login.

Hi Chris,

No, I never get to the log-in screen - it looks like it's scanning all resources, and maybe memory (sorry, total :newbie: here). Then when it's done it reboots.

First time I thought it was configuring the whole thing, but it always does the same thing.

I am able to start the text mode through "safemode"

Tnx, Maqueo

New try...

OK, so I re-installed the whole thing...

The system reboots after the installing-procedure, and hung up on me during the first time (halfway the progress bar)

The second time it displays the progress bar for a moment, and then goes into this really long list of checking everything, ending up in a really long list that lasts like 10 minutes and looks something like this:

[abc00000] bla bla bla [kernel]

It scrolls by really fast, so can't really read anything...

After the 10 min (I assume it has checked everything or whatever it did) it reboots, and goes into the same thing...

As mentiones earlier I never get to the log in or anything. I am able to start up text mode, but get to a text prompt, and don't really know what to do there

Any ideas on what to do next?

well unless there is a process starting on runlevel 5 (graphical login) that isn't on 3 (console login) then it would be the login manager itself. login on a console and then run "startx" to load into X.

Well, I can't type anything in at the text prompt either (getting there through failmode)... the cursor blinks (so it's not totally hung up), but it doesn't seem to go any further

Should I perphaps try to install another distribution?

I'm trying to break free from MS :D
