Hi, welcome to lq, I think the first
advice is to install mandriva 2006 or 2007, not version 10 (too old)
and read the sticky about urpmi aka
Installing .rpm and .tar.gz
Once you have configured urpmi, installations
should be much easier (lots of threads about
urpmi; so just read a few more posts in the forum)

Also next time, think of a better title

Please come back if you do understand
the role of urpmi, or the mandriva control centre
add software icons, aka MCC)
Basically MCC /drakrpm needs to know where to find the sofwares in rpm format (in web repositories).
http://easyurpmi.zarb.org/ helps to set those repositories

bro: thnx a lot for the infos. i will be downloading 2007 very soon. 1 more thing i need to know. say, u have typed a line commands in console and ur cursor is at the last letter of the line. so if u press left direction key of keyboard and hold it then the cursor should go at the left most position of the line. but in my system the cursor doesnt keeps going left or right if i press and hold the direction keys. it just moves a single position on one key press. if my line of command got 20 letters then i need to press the left direction key 20 times to go to the left most place. could u plz tell me how to change it?? regards

Good question.
I have never figured out.
I think when root this is designed so you cannot
delete the line too fast ;-)
I have noticed this in different distros, usually with root, not with any other users. So definitely something that can be taylored.
I do not know the answer; I do not know what it is called. Typeset? key repeat rate?

I would be happy to know the answer.
