I didn't get it either, but I have no say in whether you become a moderator....so just ignore me :D

crAckZ 03-14-2006 09:34 PM

Dont get me wrong, i would love to be a moderator, but if not just take pride in being able to help others find the right answers. sounds cheesy but i take alot of proud when i can post a helpful answer.

quick edit: my personal vote would be for cs-cam. I remember him helping me with worth while posts.

*passes envelope under the table*

wait, I didn't know we were voting for moderators, I thought this was a discussion about becoming a moderator? I call foul play!

Seriously though, that might be a good idea....letting the community vote for moderators?

hmmm. not that bad of an idea. how many accounts can i create to vote for myself :D
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
if that was the case i think you should have a certain number of posts before you can vote.

microsoft/linux 03-14-2006 10:53 PM

oh, I didn't think about that....

Moderators are not voted in; instead regular LQ'ers are invited to become mods at the site admin's discretion, which I'm sure would depend on a variety of variables/factors.

titanium_geek 03-15-2006 02:57 AM

fact 1- this is jeremy's site.
fact 2- he picks the mods
fact 3- the mods are friendly (ahem) linux people. That are friends with jeremy and he asked them to be mods.

Also many of them were picked in the early stages of LQ. I have ended up being a mod for two forums because I was at the right place at the right time (it's fun! not. so much work! :) )

anyway, asking to be a mod pretty much means you won't be. (unless the request is written on the afore mentioned brown envelope)

To be perfectly honest (and serious. with my serious face on), much of the work of the mods is tedious and boring. Yeah, I know, poor old me. More than 50% of the role involves closing duplicate threads and moving threads to the correct forum. I have no concrete figures, but it sounds right. It's mostly an administration (with a lower case 'a') role.

Don't get me wrong, it's a rewarding job, but once you've closed your 100th duplicate post, the shine tends to be rubbed off somewhat.

If it weren't for the fact that the vast majority of our members are knowledgeable intelligent, mature minded people the job would just suck. So all of you decent posters give yourself a pat on the back, you've earned it.

microsoft/linux 03-15-2006 09:21 PM

Actually, I disagree. We should all pat you on the back. You guys(or perhaps girls but I assume mostly guys) deserve more credit than you're given. And Xavier, you seem to have found a way to enjoy yourself closing tedious threads.

Thanks again.

nadroj 03-15-2006 09:31 PM

dido.

Thanks.

acid_kewpie 03-16-2006 02:21 AM

dido?

nadroj 03-16-2006 11:27 AM

oh. i guess i spelt it wrong..

ditto

as in, thanks to the mods.. what microsoft/linux was saying.

titanium_geek 03-17-2006 04:11 AM

generally, I take "you guys" to be a unisex term - "the guys" refers to males though.

*pat pat*
