LinuxQuestions.org Turns Five

I am proud to announce that two days ago, LinuxQuestions.org officially turned five. Exactly one week from today (also five years ago) I made by first post. We've come a long long way and I'd like to thank each and every member for making LQ what it is. Without it's members, LQ would be nothing. I am happy to report that this year should be a big year for LQ. We have a ton of great things on the way (including an updated forum). We should also be adding some new sites to the LQ network, which already includes the LQ Wiki and LQ ISO. As always, we want to know what you think. What does LQ need? What are we missing? In what direction would you like to see us go? Any and all feedback is welcome - we really are listening.

HB, Jeremy,

I have to say I have been on lot's of foums in my (cough cough) short life, however, your format is great and the members and mods are terrific. You mention an update. I hope you don't make to many changes in the look of LQ. It is really one of the most functional Formats I have seen...

Great :) I'm here for 3.5 years and it's like forever :)

J.W. 06-19-2005 05:45 PM

Happy Birthday LQ. All I can say is that if it weren't for LQ, I seriously doubt I'd be using Linux at all. My thanks to everyone for making LQ the flat-out best Linux resource on the planet. -- J.W.

Chromezero 06-19-2005 07:39 PM

Happy Birthday LQ. As a newer member of LQ and semi-new Linux user, I'd like to say thanks to everyone that makes all this possible. I've found alot of answers on this site. It's definately the first place I search when I have a Linux problem.

salparadise 06-20-2005 01:36 AM

The folks here on L.Q. made all the difference when I started out. As other's have already said, it weren't for L.Q. I probably wouldn't be where I am today. (Almost in full time employment using mostly Linux!)
Great community!

Happy Birthday!

Matir 06-20-2005 11:52 AM

Happy Birthday LQ! I know I haven't been here long, but I've sure enjoyed it.

Jeremy: is there any way I can help with LQ Radio? I think it would be fun to be able to help out. Have you considered the possibility of doing a live streaming show? Perhaps VOIP could even let users "call in" to the show. Sort of a talk-radio format.

slightcrazed 06-20-2005 11:57 AM

Happy B-day LQ. Here's to another 5 years of helping the community, one post at a time.

slight

jeremy 06-20-2005 01:22 PM

Matir, we do plan to move to a live streaming show in the near future.

Heh, you guys have always thought of everything before I can get there.

I wish I could contribute to LinuxQuestions in some substantial way.

scuzzman 06-20-2005 08:04 PM

Happy birthday LQ :D

You can! The Wiki is desperately in need of attention in our attempt to develop 3000 articles (non-stub and non-member pages) you can answer questions, help with the 0-reply threads, or simply click here to become a Contributing Member :)
It desperately needs to be realized that, no matter how big LQ gets, each and every contribution counts regardless of how it is given, and no contribution goes unnoticed.

jeremy 06-20-2005 08:12 PM

scuzzman - couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks.

Happy anniversary LQ!
I only joined a month ago, and have learned so much in this short time. A really good community, and I hope it stays that way!

rblythe 06-20-2005 08:14 PM

Happy birthday!!

comments:
If our question has been answered, we should be able to mark our thread as 'solved' of 'fixed' or something like that.

'solved' or 'fixed' threads should have their own search area so people can find answers to their problems faster.

After a predetermined time all posts without comments should be moved from the main page of the particular forum to an 'archive' type area so that the post receiving the most attention are easiest to spot, comment on, and learn from

I don't mean to sound harsh, but:
Not only is this completely off-topic, but this has been asked and answered before. Please feel free to use LQ's Search functionality. The answer has always been, and most likely will continue to be, that this is not necessary right now.

Shade 06-20-2005 11:49 PM

This website has contributed more to my knowledge than any other single place or entity. In the true spirit of Open Source, conversation, debate, and sharing of ideas are all encouraged here. Hoorah for LQ and its 5 years of success!

ZORIONAK !!!

exit3219 06-21-2005 05:45 AM

LQ's been my #1 source of Linux troubleshooting.
Thanks, root. :D

CONGRATS!....

Things have improved a lot and made GNU/Linux easy to use. LQ has really imporved the way I use GNU/linux.

There's only one thing missing!..

There are lot of questions which remain unanswered and increases daily.
I feel there must be someway of organizing questions in such a way that some users could happily answer questions.

In other words, as far as possible less questions with 0 replies should be there.

BTW.....this is the only BEST WIDESPREAD FORUM for GNU/LINUX ....is what I think...

KEEP GOING!!!

CONGRATS ONCE AGAIN!

MikeZila 06-22-2005 08:52 PM

Happy birthday indeed! Five years past, many more than five ahead!

Can't wait for the updated forum.

Best wished to LQ and the wiki.

jaakkop 06-26-2005 04:03 AM

Congratulations LQ!!
Another reason to celebrate. :D

My suggestion is to have a IRC channel. I know it has been suggested already but I still want to remind of it.

Happy Birthday LQ.org

I have just become a member recently and I think this site is highly useful. The only suggestion I would have is breaking the Newbies section into more defined areas like maybe KDE desktop tricks, or GNOME tricks. I think Linux is wonderful, but a bit overwhelming because of it's functionality, You can do so much with it. Happy Birthday and I hope that this site is around for a long, long time.
Tim

redhatrosh 06-27-2005 07:51 AM

Wow, what a post!...

That's your 5th post (if u havent posted any after it....)
cool...LQ turns 5 and your post number turns 5.

And I think, the ideas of GNOME and KDE can b discovered and put up here as a post by you...u can try something...!!!!

Franklin 06-27-2005 07:26 PM

Well Done!

By the 10th year I may actually have 1000 posts.

redhatrosh 06-27-2005 10:31 PM

Well, if you are experienced enough, and have time for LQ, you may have 1000 posts well in Advance!...

I am not so experienced and find most of the questions completely new....

Hopefully, I would learn more by reading and using my distro!

tmick 06-28-2005 01:03 AM

Happy Birthday LQ.org

Thanks for the compliment on my post.... if only I planned the 5th post on the 5th Birthday thing I could compliment you on recognizing my wittyness ;) instead I'll compliment you on your observation. I plan on trying more things and looking thru the "how to Articles" to see where I can contribute anything that I might know that someone else doesn't, so it might be awhile.
Cheers

redhatrosh 06-28-2005 10:26 AM

Thankx!

Oh yea..u shud contribute to the how to!...U can also contribute to the LQ Wiki!

Things are really becoming better for GNU/Linux!

Satriani 06-29-2005 09:46 AM
