vlc remote - no video

I have recently installed linux mint ktfe on my older amd athlon pc. I installed vlc remote on my ipad so that I could play dvds from the ipad.
I managed to set things up ok but when I play the dvd over the remote I can see all the progress counters etc whirring but get no video or audio on the ipad but can see and hear it normally on the pc.
Anyone had this or got any ideas.
Thanks in advance
Ric

UPDATE
Have since found out that vlc remote is working fine in that it is not designed to stream the dvd - oops

Anyone know how to do that other than copying dvd to a file?
