The ANCIENT Windows NT File Manager had the ability to display a tree and list of files in the selected subdirectory in BOTH panels. The Windows freeware program Total Commander will do the same. I am having a heck of a time finding something similar in Linux.

Two instances of Xfe will sort of replicate the functionality but is a pain to setup each time. gonome-commander is my normal tool but it lacks the trees. I have looked at several sites listing the "Best n file managers for Linux" and a number of them are close - but no cigar.

Any suggestions?

p.s. In Windows XP one could "Show windows side by side" or something like that which would divide the screen equally between two windows. Is there any such thing in Gnome or Mate? I have never come across it - but then I often overlook the obvious.

Looks like SpaceFM can be configured the way you want. See the long list of possibilities on the screenshots page (specifically the two-pane shot, but there's a lot of flexibility).

Maybe, midnight commander (mc), emelfm, or even xfe(?)

I have looked at SpaceFM. It appears that the windows within the app are all independent of each other. That is if I have a tree in one window and click on a subfolder, the files within are displayed in that window, not the adjacent window displaying files. I need the tree and list of files linked.

I have used mc. It is great for a terminal session to a remote computer. xfe is close - if I open two instances and place them side by side. It is the closest match so far. I have not seen emelfm. I will look into it.
