Good news that worked. I am wondering if some default font that ImageMagick uses is not on my distro. I am running the Antergos GNOME so virtually being an Arch install could be a bit thin in some areas. I will certainly read the man pages as I will tweak things like color etc.

Colour is the rgb value and the last digit of the 4 is transparency from 0 to 1. 0.75 gives a pleasant slight transparency to the text.
