Power management?

I installed Debian 8 with Gnome desktop, and I found out the maximum time-out is 1 hour.
I need at least 2 hours before sleep.
I installed Cinnamon and tried with it, but no difference.
I also tried with dconf editor. I could set a bigger value for timeout, but it didn't have any effect.

What could be wrong and how to find out?
Maybe some other power manager? Which?
I dumped Kubuntu (still installed as a dual boot) and whit it worked.
(But tuxguitar didn't work with KDE - at least with Kubuntu/KDE, and I didn't like Kubuntu anyway.)

And (whether as a user or as a root):
Code:
    a@jaa-debian:~$ gnome-power-manager --verbose --no-daemon
    bash: gnome-power-manager: command not found
    jaa@jaa-debian:~$ man gnome-power-manager
    No manual entry for gnome-power-manager
    jaa@jaa-debian:~$
but
Code:
jaa@jaa-debian:~$ apt list gnome-power-manager
Listing... Done
gnome-power-manager/stable,now 3.14.1-1 amd64 [installed,automatic]
However, if, in the power menu, I click "suspend", the machine goes to sleep and wakes up on key press fine.

The power managment programs of Gnome, KDE and others do not work properly.
It is nessecary to use the power managment functions of the kernel itself.

Ah, OK. Thanks.
Then I won't waste my time trying.

It's like pm-utils then?

I don't know where you get that impression from, but for me xfce4-power-manager and lxqt-powermanagement work just fine.

Do they work with Gnome or Cinnamon without extensive diddling?

I don't know, I don't use either. My systems run a mix of LXQt and KDE applications on top of the i3 WM and I had no problems so far with those power managers. The only reason for me to switch from xfce4-power-manager to lxqt-powermanagement is that xfce4-power-manager lacks the option to actually shut down a system after the specified idle time (which can be 2h and above), it only supports suspend and hibernate, while lxqt-powermanagement supports that.

Finally (I've been busy elsewhere).

xfce4-power-manager works, and the delay can be set to 'never' or 15 minutes to 5 hours, 50 minutes.
And it's there in the Debian repo (lxqt-powermanagement wasn't).

Truckful of thanks, TobiSGD.
