thanks for the advice guys, i'm definitely going to try those install helpers and be reading even more on this subject. linux seems great so far, reliable and pretty quick so i'd really like to be able to do this stuff. Thanks again.

The problem is, everytime I try to set my clock, when I hit the "ok", it resets itself to 4:00 Dec 31, 1969(!?). So I can't fix that. I'm ready to go nuts. Should I just try an entirely different distro? (I tried Yellow Dawg, but I couldn't get the internet going, and I tried Debian, but the install was hard. Really hard.)

With the clock type date mmddhhmmyyyy(in a terminal)Month Day Hour Minute Year this works perminately.

So in number form, like for moday march 2005 at 8:24

2026 is computer (military) time for 8:24.

I have to agree in theory with previous replies.
Gentoo compiles everything on your machine, meaning it is made to run there.
Gentoo automatically deals with dependancies (what to download and compile first etc)

And most importantly for people used to automatic installs:
VLoL has a single CD (downloadable and burnable) that installs GENTOO with no fuss!
( I think it secretly uses the RH installer)
This version of the GENTOO install is worth GOLD. I spent two days trying to install Gentoo manually,
before finding this gem. It takes you right up to a running GUI (Graphics Windows-like interface).
The only issue after that is connecting to the internet. ....
Once that is done, you can download and compile everything else, and automatically update your
system, similarly to Microsoft's AutoUpdate, only you don't have to be a 'Registered Legitimate' owner
of Microfluff products.
