Music and player

what do you use for playing music and movie under Fedora? I can play wav form, but not mp3 and some other movie form file, like avi, rm, and mkv.
When I play them, just said missing decoder. Update those items following the suggesstion, just got error message. What can I do? or What can you recommend?

mplayer, or the fork, mplayer2. You'll probably find one of them with yum. Get the codecs. There's an 'essential' codecs bundle for download as well.

Fedora will NEVER EVER ship with patent/royalty encumbered software
so ONLY software for GPL'd formats or software that is ,is shipped

you might want to have a look at Mjmwired's page
http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f17.html

Does that include Mplayer, Mplayer2 and VLC? (Considering open source software could somehow have the possibility of being tainted with patents, more obviously with sublibraries or modules).

John VV 09-01-2012 09:34 PM

yes
those programs are NOT in the base repos
and by law can NOT be

do to the need to brake the DMCA in the dvd use of "libdvdcss" ( that number is an illegal number - by act of congress )
and by law can not be redistributed IN SIDE THE US of A

that and MPEG-LA group
is is VERY expensive to even use ANY mpeg related software

@John VV: How bout if they drop some of the support. It could be configured at build time right?
