Mandriva KDE error...
 

Hi, when in the process of updating packages such as KDEsdk and KDE itself, everything seems to have gone wrong.

When I rebooted, and tried logging on as my user it wouldn't work. It would just go back to the logon screen. When I checked my home folder I found an .xsession-errros file.
It bassically said that the command xterm could not be found.

Now xterm doesn't actually exist on this distribution... So I'm guessing the new x that was installed when upgrading KDE is looking for things which aren't there.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Don't do that again.

:) - the best thing you can do is to reinstall your distribution completely. I've watched a few threads where guys have tried this (upgrading KDE ) and I've yet to hear about somebody doing it successfully. I usually avoid the "upgrade" feature of Fedora as well - it works much better and you'll have much less grief just reformatting the system and reinstalling a distro with an upgraded / new KDE version from first principles.

I have a simple rule of thumb as regards upgrades - if a new version of something does not provide some new feature that I absolutely need, I do not upgrade. This is espcially true if you need to use your box for work, not for play or experimentation.

You could also try removing any conflicting packages by running urpmi -e on them from the command line on a console and then try reinstalling and earlier version. And yes, Mandriva simply is very prone to dependency issues. It was reason enough for me to move on, however much I liked their latest release in other respects.
