Kernel-Source, NVIDIA- Drivers
i just reloaded RH9, and i have used Up2date and have updated the entire system, now i was going to install the NVIDIA driver for my video card. The problem is that it says that it needs the "Kernel-Source.rpm..." or something like that. I will post the full message in a min, i have to install it with X shutdown.... anyone had this problem, and where can i get the "kernel-source.rpm" file for my kernel?

ok here is the error message:
"No precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel; would you like the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel from the NVIDIA ftp site (ftp://download.nvidia.com)? _______ ________ | yes | | no | ------------ -------------- >i clicked yes "No matching precompiled kernel interface was found on the NVIDIA ftp site; this means that the installer will need to compile a kernel interface for your kernel. _________ | OK | ---------------- >i clicked ok " ERROR: Unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' rpm installed. If you know the correct kernel source file are installed you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' commandline option. ___________ | OK | ------------------- >now i guess i need the 'kernel-source' rpm for my kernel, does anyone know where to download it? |
It should be on the install disk.
|
i am not installing the driver from a disk, i downloaded the driver from the internet, my card did not come with a disk that had linux drivers on it
|
the kernel source package should be on your RH9 install disk. sorry, should have been clearer
|
even though i have updated the kernel since i have installed it using the Up2date system? should i still use the old 'kernel-source' prog off the disk?
|
if you updated your kernel, then you should use some package downloading tool from redhat and install the kernel source package for your actual kernel...
|
ok, if that is what i am supposed to do, i have no idea how to do it, i am a major n00b, i just started using linux 5days ago.... :-(
|
i feel so ignorant
|
tell me, which kernel are you using? (console type: uname -r)
|
ok hold on, i am in XP right now leme reboot and ill post it...
|
2.4.20-30.9
that is the version...... after i typed the command in..... |
I'm sorry! I fell asleep last night... :)
I think you didn't upgrade your kernel after all, I'll check it out as I get to my lab at the university and I may tell you something more from there, ok? :D |
ok thanks.....

http://updates.redhat.com/9/en/os/i3...-30.9.i386.rpm
this is a direct link to the kernel source package from your kernel..... https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHSA-2004-065.html this is the page where I got it from. hope it helps... :) |
Thank you very much. I hope it does. I will try it when i get home. again thankyou
|
OK I GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
:)
happy that you make it! :D |
I'm having this same problem.
frandalla, I got what you linked, but I'm pretty much clueless as far as what to do with it from there. I"m still getting the same error that Sherpa was getting, but now I don't know what to do with what you gave me. |
If anyone stumbles across this thread...
I ended up solving the problem. If anyone stumbles across this thread AND IS HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM..... RedHat was installing the source info in /usr/src/linux.2.4.20-8 instead of what the driver was looking for: /usr/src/linux so i just took all the info from the one RedHat wanted to make, made the correct folder and copied all the files over into it. got out of X, ran the install, and "poof" everything worked like butter. |
no need to copy stuff over. Just create a link like:
ln -s linux-2.4.20-30.9 linux |
