Question How to get Tor Browser to start in Ubuntu?

I am getting this message beginning "Tor exited during startup.":

Name:	tor-error.png
Views:	21
Size:	16.3 KB
ID:	42628

Someone having the same problem in Windows on StackExchange:

https://tor.stackexchange.com/questions/23826/tor-exited-during-startup-on-fresh-install

I use another distro family using the Ubuntu repositories where Tor Browser runs easily.

Why is Ubuntu fussy?

it is not ubuntu, but your setup. It is written: until you fix that issue it won't work

I agree with your recommendation & boot so many different versions I'll have to take note next time.

I probably tried two. The 1st was a standalone version. The second was from the repositories.

tor dependencies:
  • tor-geoipdb_0.4.2.7-1_all.deb
  • tor_0.4.2.7-1_amd64.deb
  • torsocks_2.3.0-2_amd64.deb

tor browser dependencies:
  • libdouble-conversion3_3.1.5-4ubuntu1_amd64.deb
  • libpcre2-16-0_10.34-7ubuntu0.1_amd64.deb
  • libqt5core5a_5.12.8+dfsg-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
  • libqt5dbus5_5.12.8+dfsg-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb

  • libqt5svg5_5.12.8-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb
  • libqt5test5_5.12.8+dfsg-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
  • libqt5widgets5_5.12.8+dfsg-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
  • libqt5xml5_5.12.8+dfsg-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
  • libxcb-icccm4_0.4.1-1.1_amd64.deb

  • python3-sip_4.19.21+dfsg-1build1_amd64.deb
  • python3-socks_1.6.8+dfsg-1ubuntu1_all.deb
  • qt5-gtk-platformtheme_5.12.8+dfsg-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
  • qttranslations5-l10n_5.12.8-0ubuntu1_all.deb
  • tor_0.4.2.7-1_amd64.deb

  • tor-geoipdb_0.4.2.7-1_all.deb
  • torsocks_2.3.0-2_amd64.deb

The Ubuntu process is radically different than a Tor site version that runs in a distro out-of-the-box. I do not know why they do this.

The browser window opens irregularly, wider than screen length before the error.

Thus far I have not gotten Tor to run in Ubuntu.

Tor is running. I suspect a Tor network error or configuration glitch on my system.
