Email client that compresses msg database?
Does anyone know of a linux e-mail client that automatically compresses the message base?
I've tried most of the linux e-mail clients that I could find, and all of them eventually start loading very slowly because my message database gets so large. I don't like to delete messages (except stuff that's clearly junk), so I guess I need an e-mail client that will automatically compress the message base. Thanks. |
Mutt can do this with folder hooks. I've this configured using gzip and bzip2 in my other machine, which isn't working right now. I could try to get that HD mounted here, only if you can't find this trick anyehre else.

I must be pretty dense myself. I looked under the File menu for both KMail and Thunderbird, and both have a "compact folders" option. I'll see if this makes any difference.
Thanks. |
This option just wipes out the deleted messages (which are deleted only by interting a deleted-mark). Compact isn't compress

I just use IMAP to access my mail on a local server, no need to have any client worry about maintaining a local database. Most will do header caching to speed things up, but I've never seen that affect their performance much.
