Windows AD Server to Linux Migration
The first step is education. Good for you for asking for some.
Samba is the primary solution for making a Linux server act like a MS Windows DC. As of version 4, AD is even possible. Most, if not all, of the major players (Linux distros) have samba in their repositories. I am familiar with Debian, but feel free to look around and get a feel for what works for you. Before doing anything in production, you're going to want to install and configure a few times just so you know what you're getting into, and so you can test more than one distro. Samba has a few tutorials on their site for different types of domain controllers. Start there and see where it leads you. Most important: never hesitate to ask when you get stuck. A quick answer from someone who has been there is so much better then hours of running around in circles.
I am in the process of prepping a server for doing exactly this: replacing a Windows 2008R2 AD DC with a Debian/Samba AD DC. Best of luck to you. See you on the forum.
