Learning Networking and Server basics


I am trying to create a practice server using virtual-box. I am trying to learn in particular setting up a server so that I can share files on my local network to learning php and mysql. What books/resources do you guys suggest and how would I go about doing that.

If you took your decision for a certain service that shall be accessible, the best resource is the manual or wiki for that program ("server"), mostly followed by forums. Each program has its own approach in fulfilling its task.
