Large mailbox cannot be deleted

I have a client hosted on a linux server, specifics below:

-bash-3.1# lsb_release -a
LSB Version: :core-3.1-ia32:core-3.1-noarch:graphics-3.1-ia32:graphics-3.1-noarch
Distributor ID: FedoraCore
Description: Fedora Core release 6 (Zod)
Release: 6
Codename: Zod

The site administrator's mailbox has grown to over 2600MB and is eating up disk and causing mail problems. In the past when mailboxes grow large I have been able to clear them using:
# /home/virtual/domain-name.com/var/mail/mailboxname

This time I got this response on ssh:
-bash-3.1# /home/virtual/domain-name.com/var/mail/mailboxname
-bash: /home/virtual/domain-name.com/var/mail/mailboxname: File too large

Any suggestions to clean out this overflowing mailbox will be appreciated.

echo deleted > /var/spool/mail/username

Fedora 6?! Don't tell anybody, sane people will tell you it is complete disaster security-wise and should be upgraded immediately.

Will it overwrite? Would there by any issues after executing the command?

Anyway, you got a very good idea.

Thanks for sharing.

Cool Thanks

Thanks, Emerson.

The server is definitely a dinosaur. Unfortunately I have been locked in financially but am now in the process of provisioning a different server
