What Distro Should I Use?

I want to know what type of Linux would run well on a laptop with only 133 MHz Pentium CPU and 64 MB RAM.

any small distro, Damn Small Linux, Slackware, Controlled Debian Install, Linux From Scratch, Rock Linux, etc... Just stay away from the more "we do everything for you" distros and if you want to use X try to use really light managers. Just be minimalistic, i've gotten debian working on desktop computers with similar stats easily, but because i'm most comfortable with debian and know what i'm doing. Choose a small one and the one you feel most comfortable with. If you don't want to spend too much time compiling use some binary distro, or use another computer to compile it for you, because slow computers are really slow compiling, took me over a day to get a kernel compiled on a computer once, in comparison to the hour my "good" computer takes.

Should I switch distros? I use Fedora 4, and all I need is something really simple, graphical, and easy. I don't like Fedora that much, but a friend convinced me. Can you recommend any distros, and where I can find them? I have a Dell Pentium 3 tower, 512 MB ram, 40 GB hard drive, with 20 external. Not sure what speed, but FC4 took about 15 minutes to install with the default apps and features.

Read the distro reviews from here LQ. Distros are all up to taste, altough in some cases you can't use some because they are too resource consuming. Just read reviews and such. I'd say debian, because it's what i know best, but i'm also thinking about trying more, just got to get my test rig working again and time to try new ones. With those specs you probably will be able to run any distro except some very resource consuming, but then of course i don't know any that wouldnt work with that.

I had FC4 on a similar setup and was quite happy with it. In order to be able to advise you on a 'better' distro for you you 'll have to explain why you don't like it and what you expect from your distro.

You could try slackware (www.slackware.org) or debian (www.debian.org), or if you want to experiment the arch linux i586 version (www.archlinux.org).

And then comes what matters probably most. Your choice of window manager and other applications.

I wrote a little article on that, might be of help:

You could of course just try out Damn Small Linux. (www.damnsmalllinux.org )
