usb2 not recognised

I've a problem with usb 2.0, it isn't shown in fdisk -l or usbview and I can't mount it as well... when I use usb 1.0 there is no problem. Can someone help me?

Thanks in advance

michaelk 02-16-2006 11:05 AM

Not enough information provided nor do I exactly understand the problem.

What linux distrubtion / version are you running?
What do you mean by USB 2 not recognized.
What do you mean by when you use USB 2.0 vs USB 1.0, modules, devices?
What are you trying to mount?
What are the hardware specs of the computer?

Post the output of lspci?
post the output of lsmod

Carez 02-16-2006 12:07 PM

distribution is Debian 3.0, kernel 2.6
and I mean that I can't mount a usb 2.0 device; but if I try to mount a usb1 device, there is no problem

Are you plugging the USB 2 device into a USB 2.0 controller?
Also check the output of the dmesg command for errors when mounting the USB 2.0 device

Carez 02-16-2006 02:40 PM

I'm plugging the usb device into the right controler, I managed to mount the device 4 days ago, but somehow this doesn't work anymore... when I check dmesg:

hmh, there are some errors, but i don't know what they mean...my usb controller is sde, when i try to mount the usb device, i get the message, that the special device /dev/sde doesn't exist

What is the make/model of the storage device you are trying to mount.

Typhoon Usb 2.0 Memory Adapter

So you are saying that when you plug the memory adapter into a USB 1.0 port it works ok?

Carez 02-17-2006 09:26 AM

no...when i plug in a usb 1 device it works. but I know the controller supports usb 2.0

michaelk 02-17-2006 09:57 AM

Lets start over and lets be more specific. It appears that you have more then one USB device. A mouse, memory stick and printer. You also have more then one USB controller, 2 USB 1.0s and a 2.0 controller. /dev/sde is refering to the memory stick and not the controller.

Lets just deal with the memory stick. Even though the memory stick is a USB 2 device it should also be downward compatable with a 1.0 controller. I want you to try the memory stick in the different ports to see if it might be a USB 2 module problem. Since it used to work have you changed anything lately? If you have not changed configuration settings or adding software etc the memory stick might be corrupted or went bad. Trying the stick in another PC or with windows if you duel boot would be good to verify it is a linux problem.

I also see references in dmesg to sda, sdb, sdc and sdd. Do you have other USB hard drives or is this a memory reader?
