Do you know if the drive is recognized at all?
What is the file system of the drive?
What is the output of dmesg right after you plug your USB Hard drive?

WD SmartWare.exe

/"WD SmartWare"
dotnetfx35.exe

please expand on that statement

most distros will auto mount MS ntfs partitions as READ ONLY for non root users
