unable to open /mbr
I am trying to remove lilo with the command fdisk /mbr but get "unable to open /mbr".
I want to do this so that I can reach my Windows OS (which is not recognized by lilo). I have erased all partitions except the ones containing Windows, after having a failed Gentoo. HELP! |
You have to let window$ repair the mbr. If you put the M$ XP cd (assuming it is XP, the older versions may support this as well) and boot to a repair prompt, there should be a choice to repair the MBR.
You can check google and microsoft's website, and there will be instructions of how to issue and use the repair feature of the disk. Peace, JimBass |
Thx.
The problem i s that I dont have that cd. |
If the distro you're using has taken a snap-shot
you could try lilo -u /dev/hda Cheers, Tink |
If not try making a win xp or win 2k bootdisk. You can get the images from here and then use dd to write them to a floppy.
Before you redo the mbr, you may want to save the lilo mbr to a file so you can boot to linux using the nt bootloader. A guide to doing this can be found here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...45#post1733645 |
