Ubuntu 10.04 Network Adapters not recognized

I recently installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my netbook, and have been unable to connect to the internet through wireless or wired. I mainly use this computer away from wired lines so the wired part isn't extremely important, but not being able to use wireless has turned my netbook into a $500 paper weight.

I'm pretty sure the reason the devices aren't recognized is because of mismatched drivers.

I downloaded b43-fwcutter-012 and the correct (I think) broadcom driver; however, I can't get the cutter to install. I get this message:

Code:

aaron@aaron-netbook:~/Desktop/b43-fwcutter-012$ make
cc -Os -fomit-frame-pointer -std=c99 -Wall -pedantic -D_BSD_SOURCE -DFWCUTTER_VERSION_=012  -c -o fwcutter.o fwcutter.c
make: cc: Command not found
make: *** [fwcutter.o] Error 127

Kubuntu-10.04 is still under development. File bugs with bugs.launchpad.net

punkarea51 04-05-2010 11:50 AM

I understand that; however, I also installed Ubuntu 9.10 and reinstalled 8.4 (the original OS), and have the same problem. So it's not a problem isolated to 10.04.

ordinary 04-05-2010 01:44 PM

The error message says cc isn't installed. I'd install cc, I guess. It's the c compiler, and make wants it.

punkarea51 04-05-2010 01:55 PM

I really have no idea about this Linux stuff. I've only used this to take notes in class.

I've looked up this problem in another thread here, and someone suggested using this:

Code:

su -
yum -y install gcc gcc++

However, when it asks for my password, it says:

Code:

su: Authentication failure

So unless there's some other super secret password that I didn't enter into the system, I'm at a complete loss.

yum is a package manager from SuSE. In ubuntu you can install packages with apt-get command.
Try to use sudo apt-get install gcc g++.

punkarea51 04-05-2010 02:58 PM

I really appreciate the help.

I got further with that command; however, it seems that I'm missing yet more files.

Code:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package gcc

Samotnik 04-05-2010 04:27 PM

I think you haven't got repos enabled. Open file /etc/apt/sources.list and uncomment or add repos:
Code:

deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main restricted
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner
deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu lucid partner
deb http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates main restricted
deb-src http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid-updates main restricted
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-security main restricted

Then make sudo apt-get update and then you can install software.

I have zero access to the internet on that machine. That's what is making this process exceptionally painful.

All of those links are in the source.list file, though.

"cc: Command not found" means that make cannot find 'cc', you probably don't have a C compiler installed. Try installing GCC or downloading a pre-compiled binary package.

punkarea51 04-06-2010 07:17 AM

I downloaded and installed the GNU C Compiler 4.4.3; however, when I type in gcc -v, I get:

Code:

The program gcc can be found in the following packages:
 * gcc
 * pentium-builder
Try: sudo apt-get install <selected package>

Using that command yields

Code:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package gcc

Doesn't sudo apt-get install search the online archives?

Also, make still does not work.

Hardware Lister (lshw) - B.02.14
usage: lshw [-format] [-options ...]

format can be

-xml            output hardware tree as XML
        -short          output hardware paths
        -businfo        output bus information

options can be
-class CLASS    only show a certain class of hardware
-C CLASS        same as '-class CLASS'
-c CLASS        same as '-class CLASS'
-disable TEST  disable a test (like pci, isapnp, cpuid, etc. )
-enable TEST    enable a test (like pci, isapnp, cpuid, etc. )
        -quiet          don't display status
-sanitize      sanitize output (remove sensitive information like serial numbers, etc.)
-numeric        output numeric IDs (for PCI, USB, etc.)

As far as binaries being available, I'm not really sure what that means, unfortunately.

Still says cc is not installed.

Is there any particular reason compilers aren't included?
