SuSe 9.2 cant access windont network
I am trying to get SuSe 9.2 box to access the shares on an XP Pro machine.
The problems I'm having are as follows........ 1. The XP machine can see the linux box in network places but cannot access it. 2. The Linux machine cannot find any workgroups on the network. both machines have IP addresses and i have configured both Samba server/client sections but still no luck..... Any Ideas. |
are you talking about KDE and network browsing ?
kde <--> samba packages installed ? did you try smbclient -U administrator -L //xp.box.ip.goes.here |
I have entered the command u gave and this is the result.....

ok. at least linux can see the windows shares.
this is ONE option (using lisa, needs configuring with control center): http://support.novell.com/cgi-bin/se...assel_smb.html the other one would be to install all kde-packages that relate to network and/or samba. then there should be an Icon 'Network Browsing' on your desktop. if not go to konqueror and type 'service:/' in the top line. this should show 2 lines. one of them should be 'windows network' just click on it and all workgroups and whatnot should show up. |
I already have network browsing on my desktop, when i click it it shows the two icons SLP and Windows Network but if i select windows network it returns saying that there are no workgroups on the network?
Cheers for your support |
disable (or config) your firewall
YAST -> Security and Users -> Firewall -> ... |
I have the same problem: Suse 9.2 can't access XP
If you finally solve the problem, let me know; I have exactly the same issue: I can see the Linux machine from XP (inside my MSHOME workgroup), but when I click on it there is no access.
Both machines can ping each other. At the Linux suse 9.2 side I can also see the Windows icon, but after clicking on it it says that tere are no other workgroups available. fernando@linux:~> smbclient -L lakeway01 -U fernand Password: Domain=[LAKEWAY01] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Sharename Type Comment --------- ---- ------- IPC$ IPC Remote IPC print$ Disk Printer Drivers SharedDocs Disk virus Disk My Music Disk C Disk hpphotos Printer hp photosmart 1115 series downloads Disk HPLaserJ Printer HP LaserJet IIP Plus amat Disk ADMIN$ Disk Remote Admin C$ Disk Default share Domain=[LAKEWAY01] OS=[Windows 5.1] Server=[Windows 2000 LAN Manager] Server Comment --------- ------- Workgroup Master --------- ------- fernando@linux:~> Any help would be very welcome. Do you have readed my posting (before yours) ? I have had the same problem too. And I posted my solution. Do you have tested this? It is my recommendation to do this first.
Now I wont post it again. |
Thanks so much!
I tried and thought that it didn't work, but now I rebooted the system after the "no firewall" and then it started working. I can access even my XP based printer from the Suse 9.2 tool. Thanks! Fernando DeBrito |
Hm, I've got the same problem on fedora 3 gnome.
Code:
# mount -t smbfs //stue/stue /mnt/windows/ Ping and smbclient works well as for The_Landlord. |
Dunno if this helps
I thought I didn't have any luck with samba and all that, but without dropping my firewall I learned that you can still access WinXP from SuSE using 'smb://[WinXP IP address]' in konqueror
ex: smb://192.168.0.50 Hope that may help |
I am probably too new to be of much help, but I had this problem too, and i still wanted to run my firewall, so I went into YaST, and configed the firewall, adding 'UDP 137' when I got to the 'Expert' button, and now I see the whole network neighborhood. Hope this may help you.
