Remote linux x-windows Tutorial request
 

The tutorial i want to request is:
1. Installing a x-windows server with kde or gnome on pretty much any distro
a. But having minimum services running. For example: dont just select desktop machine from the install menu. When you do that there is 100 other things running that I dont know what they do, so they probably dont need to be running.

2. Figuring out how to use ANY of the softwares that will allow me to connect to the linux machine and have a GUI! I dont care if its VNC or anything else. I've never been able to get one of the softwares out there to work.
(VNC works but it only displays terminal, no kde or gnome for some reason)

I'm not an idiot but I dont have an entire day to sit down and play with it... I've tried before over the period of several hours but it ends in failure each time. (and i just switch the machine back to windows)

i think this might help, not 100% sure of what you really meant.

You also should NEVER run Xwindows as root. Major security hole. Having any GUI apps run is a major hole and problem in my eyes. You can enable x forwarding in the SSH config, which allows individual apps to be forwarded. For example, on a machine that has no GUI we have it forwarding Mozilla, so I can see things on the same LAN as the server from home. To completely hand off the management of the server to a GUI is a tremendous waste of resources.

Also, your problem with VNC is simply that it wasn't configured correctly. Look on the web, there are plenty of posts on setting up VNC to display the WM you want. It is also on the realvnc FAQ, here: http://realvnc.com/faq.html#grey

Again though, don't run X on a server. Get your command line together, that is where the power of linux comes out, not in clicking on pictures.
