Remote Access
 

I have a Dell Dimension 3000 dual boot Suse9.2/XP running a Counter Strike Source games server on a separate and remote ADSL line. This is working fine and automatically reboots if there is a crash.

At home I have an XP only PC on which I want to remotely access the server (funds permitting and making sure that it won't infringe on the warranty, the intention is to add another HD to this and also have it dual boot at some point in the future)

Things I want to be able to do.

Locate, open ,alter and save text / .cfg files
Add files - moving them from home PC to Server

oh yes and all of this to be capable in a secure manner

This is so that while the server is running, I can make changes from home rather than having to be sitting in front of the server console. Lazy perhaps, but 2 machines are about 20 miles apart.

Try ssh. it works like telnet but is encrypted for more security. It is like sitting at the console at the box. If you want to remote X then use x11vnc which works like realvnc in Windows.

SSH is the best way to remote control a computer in the Linux world IMO. Try it out.

you can securely access your linux box from your windows box via ssh using putty:

http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/.../x86/putty.exe

I should be using SSH on my Linux box - the games server. And Putty on my windows box - my home pc that I want to use to access the server.

Putty looks like a straight forward self extracting/ installing program

I've looked for SSH and found this site

but when I look at any of the mirrors typical below

I am confronted by a screed of files - tarballs I've never dealt with but I have a small guide that I think I am okay with but it it which one of these files

Am I on the right track - any clues as to which of these files I should be looking for?

pretty much every distro on the planet includes ssh, check you CDs...

you really shouldn't need to go get it at the openssh.org website unless you need to compile it from source for some reason...
