KDE vs. Gnome
 

I'm guessing that KDE and Gnome are the two main window managers everyone uses. I was wondering if someone could gimme a break down. Which one is better ? What are the pros and cons of using either or both ? Which one is more robust and user friendly ? Questions of this type are what I would like to know the answers to ......... specifically refering to the newer version KDE 3.3.1 and GNome 2.8.1

it's purely a matter of preference...although i find KDE a lot like MS windows in the way it's set up and works and stuff. i used KDE in the beginning because it was "familiar" and friendly, but i'm truly addicted to fluxbox now, so i can't tell you the last time i even logged into KDE. if you're coming from a windows machine...you might be more comfy with KDE.

There have been lots of threads about this issue. search around to find out some responses to the previous threads. like posted above it's a matter of choice and whether one fulfills your needs when compared to the other.

I find there are more applications integrateed into kde....

this is just my opinion... BUT...
i think that GNOME was created as a 100% Free Version of KDE.
but quite a while ago the QT licence (what kde is built from) changed to open source.

anyways....

user friendslyness is very close...

Kde is Beautiful in an eye candy way...
GNOME is Beautiful in a Clean Crisp Desktop way

eye candy is nice, but too much distracts you from the actual important things, like text, buttons, window managers etc etc.

ohh, also Gnome is a little lighter, and therefore faster loading...only a second or 2 though.

install both, give both a try, and make up your own mind.

ive had to use every distro and every desktop before i setled on my fave setup..

Distro Gentoo.
Kde for normal desktop,
Fluxbox for developing and remote login's

GNOME and KDE are desktop managers. I suggest install them both because you may come across a program that needs either one.

I use XFCE. Its a desktop manager but much lighter than GNOME and KDE.

Have a look at http://xwinman.org/ for more desktop and window managers.

If I know my facts right KDE is an all in one Desktop and Window Manager. You can not change the window manager in the KDE env.
Pros: More consistency and in ways can be more stable because it is installed together and united together.
Cons: you can't have the choice that Linux users usally want

Gnome is just a desktop manager and is packaged with a default window manager but can be changed at anytime.

lol.. in a way you are right.....

KDE more customisable.... but Gnome is less interconnected.. if that makes sence.

Basically, KDE is very customisable...
but you can mix and match components of GNOME...

if you use KDE, then you use KDE... end of story.

but if you use gnome...
you could use all of gnome,
or you could use gnome taskbar with iceWM window manager.
or Gnome's window manager with iceWM's taskbar, etc etc.

From my expierence, GNome is VERY VERY straight forward. Ill back this up to the death. It is, thats the window manager I show everyone, because its easy to navigate, even the drop down is easy. Tho, its not as customizeable as KDE, its gets you there. Its not loaded with softwrae either, its faster, and lighter on the memory. And, like MAC. Theres not much that is made from 3rd part developers...

KDE on the other hand is very customizable, very. But it'll get a new user confused after a while, since som distros come with a configuration utility, well, so does KDE. Gnome has one to, but it somewhat coinsides with the vendors config util's. And, lately, its become very very bloated. Making it slow, and fat. All in all, I like GNome more, but Fluxbox is my window manager.
