as root run:

ifconfig

in a console to see network related info. there are alot of programs that will work for this search around in your menu's too.

Try

/sbin/ifconfig

ctrl alt F2
 

with Fedora Core2, alot of commands wouldn't work from the GUI terminal - I had to ctrl alt F2 to start a text session and the commands would work fine from there. Never understood that, but it was good enough for me :) To get back to the GUI press ctrl alt F7.
