Phenomenon,
See these links: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PortableDevices/iPod http://www.gtkpod.org/wiki/Getting_s...ng_up_the_iPod |
I completely understand your frustration. I started Linux about a week ago and did not have a pleasant time getting all the hardwares to get around to work. And it wasn't even a "full-scale" Linux; it was DSL (Damn Small Linux) which is a CD-bootable sudo-OS!
However, the important thing (that I have learned) is that one needs to have patience when doing this. I borrowed a 2000-page (or.. it seemed about that thick) reference book on this and started going through it, learning step-by-step, and of course, asking people when things became too bad. So how about take a breath... What makes Linux interesting, and drives me to learn is that it's not easy to make them work. It's a challenge and I like it. If you would think along those lines when trying to use them, I think it's going to help much. Also, this will sound critical, but my intentions are none but: you really have to love computers to do this. If you are not prepared to sit on a computer for 5 hours, flipping through pages of reference book and searching the web for hours for a tutorial, and actually love doing it, then I cannot see how you can enjoy Linux to its fullest potential. Anyway, a lot of jabbers from a person who started Linux a week ago... if there are veterans who disagrees with me, I'm sorry for annoying you... |
Hi there,
Its been more than 24 hours now we have been with this issue. Have you downloded the software recommended? Have you tried to install critunes? Let us know so that we can take this further. |
Some stuff I forgot to mention earlier:
Quote:
Code:
cat /etc/lsb-release Code:
uname -a While these are not specific to the ipod, here are some great sites for getting started with Ubuntu: http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/ http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Maverick And for dual booting with Windows: http://members.iinet.net.au/~herman546/ Hope some of this stuff is helping. Write back if you need further assistance. |
I still can't put songs in my Ipod
Alright guys..You did not like my last question because i used rude language..Ok im not gonna swear or anything anymore but it's been 2 weeks and i still can't put songs in my Ipod. Here are some details..
I have the latest Ubuntu version I have gtkpod, amarok, banshee, rhymbox and hipo ipod.. My ipod is a 3rd generation shuffle (2GB,silver) I can load my Ipod and open it..i can even put songs in it but when i eject it and check if the songs are there it sais "please use iTunes to sync music in this Ipod"..Then i connect my ipod again and check if the songs are there and i can see them there..but the ipod won't play them.Maybe i am doing something wrong (don't ask me if i click "save changes" button before i eject the ipod cause i do.If im doing something wrong please tell me what that is or if just tell me what i need to do in a simple way like "you need to download this programm and then click this and this etc.." I'm gonna wait 3 more days and im giving up ,i'm gonna return it and buy a mp3 player. But i really want to make this work. |
Hi Phenomenon,
Isn't iPod some sort of gadget from Apple? Wouldn't you be better off asking on some Apple forum? I obviously don't know anything about Apple type things so how does my (or anyone else's) knowledge of Gnu/Linux help you on this? ciao, jdk |
Nope! I've no idea either but my mate Google might... :)

I use nothing but AMAROK to load songs onto my IPOD. Perhaps you can be more specific about your steps. I generally burn complete compact discs using grip and LAME (which encodes the disc to MP3 format. I then use AMAROK to copy those play lists to the IPOD. I have never used ITUNES. My player is an older 80 gig IPOD.

hmm i've had this problem before too, could be you need a newer version of libgpod, or perhaps you have the wrong model of ipod selected?
|
I'm at home so I can more or less replicate what I've done. As I mentioned earlier, I use grip with lame to convert a compact disc to an MP3 format. The beauty of this approach is that it also makes the ID3 tags that get used by the IPOD. Since you already have the MP3's you can skip that step. I start AMAROK and include the directory with the MP3's in the search path. I highlight the tab labeled PLAYLIST and then go to the button entitled 'Tools'. I request a re-scan of everything. Hopefully a play list is produced for you MP3's. I then plug in the IPOD, not before, wait until it is recognized, and then drag the play list to the IPOD. I have not had any problems using that method. In the past, I've had to delete things on the IPOD that were previously left, but could not be played.
I hope that helps you in some way. |

libgpod is the backend 'engine' that is used by gtkpod, amarok etc... for dealing with ipods, i would just do an apt-get update (if you are using ubuntu) to see if a newer version of libgpod comes down the pipe if not try and upgrade to the latest ubuntu version if you havnt't already
