Install Rhythmbox or gtkpod.

So first of all, when you created the thread you were given an example of what a bad title is. Apparently you decided to copy+paste it.
Also, all that swearing is very irritating. I really doubt that a lot of people are willing to read your post. It is comprised of one gutter word after another.

Just to make sure that you do understand what I am trying to tell you:
Your post is crap!

@all_others: sorry for my last remark. But this had to be said.

Nottingham. Cool city :)

We went on vacation from the States to Europe a couple of years ago. My son is a big Games Workshop fan. So we spent a few days walking distance from Warhammer World. I have very pleasant memories of walking along the canal with my little thumb drive/MP3 player.

We don't need no stinkin' iTunes ;-)

PS:
Yes, I have an Apple nano, too. Never use it though - I prefer nice, portable MP3's.

PPS:
As rkski said, there ARE alternatives for using your iPod with open source. But the problem is that Apple keeps changing their format. Sometimes the "open" solutions work - sometimes they don't.

Your best bet is to keep you library in something like .ogg or .mp3 (or heck - even .wma) instead.

IMHO .. PSM

If you would tell us what distro you are using we could probably direct you to tutorials to help you learn. If you are using Ubuntu, I know a crap load of stuff to help you get started.
When I was new to linux I didn't know anything either. I did a lot of reading, and now I know enough to multiboot several linux distros plus WindowsXP. You will have to do some reading to get the most out of any linux distro.

It always helps to research what hardware is best supported in linux before you buy. When I wanted an mp3 player, I bought a Sandisk Sansa Fuze, because Sandisk advertises on their website that the Fuze supports linux. It is cheaper than the overpriced Apple products also.

You can get your ipod to work in linux though. Rhythmbox (on Gnome) and Amarok (on KDE) both support ipods.

And welcome to the LQ fourms!

Did you find that Doc helpful ?

Linux for newbies from about dot com.

Linux is not Windows. It's not hard, but it's different.

Apple does not support Linux because they want you in their Walled Orchard. Microsoft wants you behind closed Windows.

Linux knocks down walls and opens windows, so neither Apple nor Microsoft makes things easy for Linux.

There are workarounds, but one needs to stop, think, and research to find them.

Hi there,
@op - remember that this is a technical issue and you are not the first or the last person to have this issue. So someone before you has actually worked with this issue and has resolved it. I do not know if any one of us has a magic wand that we could wave and make it go away. It will need some co-operation from you.
I prefer not to have any non-portable stuff or hardware. Never used critunes. One hardware and one format and one way to play that file does not make a lot of sence to me.
I lent my linux (debian) laptop to my cousin - a windows only guy and using gtkpod he was able to sync the ipod after working it for say an hour. Hopefully you would be able to do the same. Post if you have any issues.
Hope this helps.

I completely understand your frustration. I started Linux about a week ago and did not have a pleasant time getting all the hardwares to get around to work. And it wasn't even a "full-scale" Linux; it was DSL (Damn Small Linux) which is a CD-bootable sudo-OS!

However, the important thing (that I have learned) is that one needs to have patience when doing this. I borrowed a 2000-page (or.. it seemed about that thick) reference book on this and started going through it, learning step-by-step, and of course, asking people when things became too bad.

So how about take a breath...

What makes Linux interesting, and drives me to learn is that it's not easy to make them work. It's a challenge and I like it. If you would think along those lines when trying to use them, I think it's going to help much. Also, this will sound critical, but my intentions are none but: you really have to love computers to do this. If you are not prepared to sit on a computer for 5 hours, flipping through pages of reference book and searching the web for hours for a tutorial, and actually love doing it, then I cannot see how you can enjoy Linux to its fullest potential.

Anyway, a lot of jabbers from a person who started Linux a week ago... if there are veterans who disagrees with me, I'm sorry for annoying you...

Hi there,
Its been more than 24 hours now we have been with this issue. Have you downloded the software recommended? Have you tried to install critunes? Let us know so that we can take this further.

Some stuff I forgot to mention earlier:

To find out what version of Ubuntu you are running, simply run in the terminal:
Code:

cat /etc/lsb-release
Then to find whether you have 32bit or 64bit Ubuntu, run:
Code:

uname -a
It will report either i686 for 32bit, or x86_64 for 64bit.
While these are not specific to the ipod, here are some great sites for getting started with Ubuntu:
http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/
http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Maverick
And for dual booting with Windows:

Hope some of this stuff is helping. Write back if you need further assistance.

I still can't put songs in my Ipod

Alright guys..You did not like my last question because i used rude language..Ok im not gonna swear or anything anymore but it's been 2 weeks and i still can't put songs in my Ipod. Here are some details..
I have the latest Ubuntu version
I have gtkpod, amarok, banshee, rhymbox and hipo ipod..
My ipod is a 3rd generation shuffle (2GB,silver)
I can load my Ipod and open it..i can even put songs in it but when i eject it and check if the songs are there it sais "please use iTunes to sync music in this Ipod"..Then i connect my ipod again and check if the songs are there and i can see them there..but the ipod won't play them.Maybe i am doing something wrong (don't ask me if i click "save changes" button before i eject the ipod cause i do.If im doing something wrong please tell me what that is or if just tell me what i need to do in a simple way like "you need to download this programm and then click this and this etc.." I'm gonna wait 3 more days and im giving up ,i'm gonna return it and buy a mp3 player. But i really want to make this work.

jdkaye 11-01-2010 09:41 AM

Hi Phenomenon,
Isn't iPod some sort of gadget from Apple? Wouldn't you be better off asking on some Apple forum? I obviously don't know anything about Apple type things so how does my (or anyone else's) knowledge of Gnu/Linux help you on this?
ciao,
jdk

I use nothing but AMAROK to load songs onto my IPOD. Perhaps you can be more specific about your steps. I generally burn complete compact discs using grip and LAME (which encodes the disc to MP3 format. I then use AMAROK to copy those play lists to the IPOD. I have never used ITUNES. My player is an older 80 gig IPOD.

Well i download my songs from the net and they are already in mp3 format..then i use amarok and i just drag them in my ipod from the music library.

frieza 11-01-2010 02:15 PM

hmm i've had this problem before too, could be you need a newer version of libgpod, or perhaps you have the wrong model of ipod selected?

apolinsky 11-01-2010 07:04 PM

I'm at home so I can more or less replicate what I've done. As I mentioned earlier, I use grip with lame to convert a compact disc to an MP3 format. The beauty of this approach is that it also makes the ID3 tags that get used by the IPOD. Since you already have the MP3's you can skip that step. I start AMAROK and include the directory with the MP3's in the search path. I highlight the tab labeled PLAYLIST and then go to the button entitled 'Tools'. I request a re-scan of everything. Hopefully a play list is produced for you MP3's. I then plug in the IPOD, not before, wait until it is recognized, and then drag the play list to the IPOD. I have not had any problems using that method. In the past, I've had to delete things on the IPOD that were previously left, but could not be played.

I hope that helps you in some way.

Well i do select the right model i'm sure about that..but i don't know what libgpod is..that might be the problem. What do i need to do?

frieza 11-02-2010 04:17 PM

libgpod is the backend 'engine' that is used by gtkpod, amarok etc... for dealing with ipods, i would just do an apt-get update (if you are using ubuntu) to see if a newer version of libgpod comes down the pipe if not try and upgrade to the latest ubuntu version if you havnt't already

I searched for "lipgpod" and downloaded all that i found..Now what?

frieza 11-03-2010 04:31 PM

ubuntu you'd simply open a terminal (applications/accessories/terminal)
Code:

sudo apt-get install libgpod amarok gtkpod
and try configuring either amarok or gtkpod
