How do I get KDE/KDM forwarded with x11 SSH?

I've managed to set things up to the point where I can start xclock with the putty ssh terminal and have it show up as a window on my windows client rendered by x-deep32 x-server emulator.

I've tried issuing the command "kdm start" but no window with a window manager pops up.

How do I get this to work so that I can control my remote ArchLinux machine through my windows client with KDE window manager?

I believe remote login can (and often is by default) configured in the kdm / gdm / xdm settings. Check the configuration files.

alright cool that actually worked.

Now I just cant get it to look properly. First when i log in the KDE comes up as fullscreen looking perfectly fine, but then it goes into windows-window-mode on my client side and all the x graphics get messed up.

Maybe I just need a better pc x-server? anyone know any good ones that work with KDE?

There is Cygwin/X which will also give you a bash shell. You can use ssh -x from a cygwin shell instead of using putty.

I didn't use it for a very long time, so maybe it has improved, but I found cygwin/X to be rather slow. There are commercial XServers out there. I've used Exceed in a corporate setting. That works faster than cygwin/X, but is not open source, and has its own quirks.

I first tried using VcXsrv which seems to be some GUI implementation of cygwinX. It actually shows the KDE login screen just fine after connecting with xdmcp, but after I log in and the x cursor changes and some icons indicating that KDE is loading show up in the cetner, VcXsrv always crashes.

I tried cygwinx and used the "XWin.exe -query <IP>" command, but all I get is a black screen titled "<IP>:0.0" while the VcXsrv is titled "VcXsrv Server - <IP>:0.0"

I just installed these programs and haven't done any configuration. Is there anything I missed that causes the VcXsrv crashes or cygwinx inability to actually show anything?

Just installed Xming which seems almost identical to VcXserv with the exception that it doesn't crash on login. Seems like it's all working now. I'm actually doing stuff on my server in a KDE desktop environment, just as if I was at the actual computer, it's pretty awesome.

Also using KDE for the first time, and it's really cool with lots of funky stuff that Win7 doesn't have :D

Any way to get sound lol?
