Hi linux n00b here, first time post
 

Hi all, i have a question about linux 2.4.18-3 kernel and 2.4.18-10 kernel :-). I installed linux rh 7.3 about three days ago and things are going fine :-). I learnt how to use rpm, rpm --rebuild -- target, tar, and some other basic things and that is it :-( i wish time would stand still so i can learn more in a single instant :-). Where e-nuff jabber.

1. For the kernel, is the rpm source file better then the regular rpm?
2. In the source kernel file, are there the kernel headers and so on?
3.when upgradeing the kernel from source is it better to use
rpm --rebuild --target athlon ( if you have a athlon system ) instead of, rpm --rebuild --target i686. well from what I've learned
i686 work better for (pentium) and athlon work better for (athlon).
I don't know if what I've learned stand good e-nuff but i hope i'm right :-D.
4.If you have a magically way of upgrading your kernel or have successfully upgraded a kernel from 2.4.18-3 to 2.4.18-10 manully please let me know your secert before I upgrade thank you.

1) in theory, but any general user who says they can tell the difference is a liar though. i'd not recommend bothering with source rpms and stuff, just get tar.gz's from kernel.org

2) headers yes, they are part of the source afterall. so on's... kinda depends what so on's are meant to be.

3) again, just use real source. learn it the proper way.

4) why bother? there's so so so little difference. upgrade to 2.4.19 instead if you have to fiddle with something.

4. The only difference between those two are the patched applied to them. Pretty much everything is the same! Go for something more challenging!

When I said so on, I mean like .c files, things that are not on the system when you do upgrade.
I did the tar.gz and found that more troublesome than the, src.rpm file. But the good thing is you get to pick what you want with the tarball.

What do you mean by " Go for something more challenging!
" is there a harder way out there besides kernel-hacking? :-) ( i love that word, can't wait until I'm that good ). Everyday I find linux to be more troublesome but more enjoyable.
I'm never going back to windoze again ( well when I get better at linux I will never go back to windoze hahaha :-) )

What I meant was that upgrading from .18-3 to .18-10 is a little pointless, unless there is a patch that you need for your hardware to work. If you were simply upgrading your kernel for the sake of upgrading it, then I would advise you to go dor 2.4.19... that's all.
