Gnome icons does not display properly

Really it's a very bad day for me.
I am using RedHat 9
Now when I login gnome all of the files as well as the folders have the same icon type.
I mean to say that normally an .mpg file has different type icon, a folder has diff. type and a office file has diff............ whereas all the files and folders in my case have the same icon but there is no problem in executing them.

I tried to run the Theme option present in the preference option but it showed a error
The default theme schemas could not be found on. This means that you probably don't have metacity installed, or that your gconf is configured incorrectly.

Can you log in as root? If you can and everything displays fine, it appears you have a permissions problem.

You can run rpm with a command line that will recreate all the permissions for you when you installed by using the switch --setperms.

I had to use this once or twice in the past when I fudged something with my unwieldy root skills.
