Your router appears connected as it responding to pings.
It may be worth to check firewall settings
in the GUI, you can jst check that the WWW HTTP box is checked.
Sorry cant tell you how to do that with terminal.

hope this helps

Is Work Offline enable in the Firefox?
Try pinging to google and see if it shows any icmp packets.

You can also use any text browser to check if firefox pains you.

If you are BSNL Customer, Quick way to check is:

http://192.168.1.1

Does it opens up a diagnostic info webpage?
If it doesnt then check the modem connectivity.

If it does open then go to WAN and see the first entry assigned any IP(may be starting with 172.x.x.x).

Hope it helps !!
If not, revert back soon.

Please post your /etc/interfaces files and the output of
Code:

ifconfig
route -n

Catkin,
its not /etc/interfaces but /etc/network/interfaces.
