Creating shortcut for installed app
 

I just installed Thunderbird on my system (/bin/programs/thunderbird) - running SUSE Linux 9.0.

I can run Thunderbird if (using the file manager under Gnome) I navigate to the directory and click on Thunderbird.

I created a shortcut (link) to the program that appeared on my desktop, however when I click on it nothing happens - Thunderbird does not run.

Question: How can I create a functioning desktop shortcut to this (or any other program that I install)?

You are not supposed to put directories in /bin according to the Linux File Hierarchy Standard. The right place to install thunderbird would be in /opt or /usr/local. Since you already know how to create a launcher, make sure your command is entered correctly e.g. if Thunderbird had been in /opt, the command to enter for the shortcut is /opt/thunderbird/thunderbird.

Try right clicking on it or maybe single clicking, I don't remember which and selecting "properties" (or something of the like). Then make sure the path for the launcher is /bin/programs/thunderbird.

I wasn't sure (being a newbie to Linux) where I should install programs, which is why in my ignorance i opted for /bin/programs...
