Edit: misread the post, dont see a delete option from the lq app

tekhead2 09-20-2011 03:58 PM

Your aspire is running a stripped down version of Fedora called Linpus Lite, basically they took all the larger programs etc out of the OS to make room so it would fit on the smaller sized solid state drives they were putting in the netbooks back then. You can continue to use the installed OS , and attempt to update it, but I doubt you will have any luck. With all Linux versions you will require ROOT access in order to make system wide changes, similar to the Admin users in Windows. I suggest trying your hand at what you have first before you go making the jump to installing another version of linux. The versions of Linux that came on the earlier netbooks were pretty bulletproof since they were marketed at non-linux users, so play with it mess with it see what you can do. Then when your ready try installing a full version of Linux like Ubuntu, or Fedora. There are also some other threads on here about your specific model and Linpus Lite http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...s-lite-669864/. I think you will not have much luck trying to install anything newer on there using the current OS.

thanks tekhead2.

would my netbook run slow if i put the latest ubuntu on it? as it is only a 8GB SSD and 512MB ram? i would use windows (dare i say that word on here ;) ) but am thinking it will run unbearably slow any thoughts/opinions?

yancek 09-20-2011 05:16 PM

Take a look at the site below. The minimum RAM is 512 and recommended is 1GB. You won't have much room to install anything with an 8GB SSD.

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...emRequirements

PTrenholme 09-20-2011 07:06 PM

Have you tried the Linpus support site? Their FAQ file says the default (root?) password is 111111

I suspect that their "Download" tab might contain so helpful information, but (not having a Linpus system) I didn't bother to check. Sorry - sort of. :)

jefro 09-20-2011 08:35 PM

Might work with sudo.

would it make much difference if i used the sd card expansion bay with a 32gb card?

thanks for all the support guys :)

What I did before I upgraded to a proper hard drive was to make two partitions on a 16G sd card. I put / on the ssd, I put /home and /usr in their own partitions on the sd card (in the "storage expansion" slot)
The down side is that it take a bit of time for the sd card reader to come online as it is not recognised by the bios. So there will always be errors showing during the boot process!
And if you remove that sd card, the system won't boot at all.

Linpus is useless for all practical purposes. Your average smartphone has a better operating system.

I recommend that you use Lubuntu or another Lxde based distro. Nautilus chews memory from time to time and will cause the system to go to swapping, which, due to the ssd's slowwrite speed, will freeze the system.
When you upgrade the ram, try to get a 1G ram (for a total of 1.5G) It must be a 533Mhz DDR2 SODIM ram as the faster rams won't work at all.

Upgrading from ssd to a sata 2.5" hdd is possible, but be warned that this requires soldering to the motherboard and modifying the case by cutting away mounting pillars etc.

Thanks for your reply i have downloaded a recovery disc for it and am gonna create a recovery stick. So hopefully this should reset the password that the previous owner has created wont it?

i was thinking about putting a HDD in it but i am not the most patient person in the world and not the best at soldering.

Although i am looking at putting Ubuntu onto it can anyone suggest other linux OS'S that will run smooth on it? and where to download them from?

Thanks everyone for all your help

I don't think it does but I can't say for sure!

Best to get a professional who has a temperature controlled iron to do it. Damage to the motherboard would turn your AAO into a really pretty paperweight!

I'm running Crunchbang on mine! It runs very well. But be aware that Crunchbang needs some manual configuration for the best experience! (in other words, it's not recommended for total newbies!)

jefro 09-21-2011 06:08 PM

Recovery usually replaces data to as bought state.

Why put a hard drive in if you don't have to. Use a usb flash to boot up with and use internal to store the rest.

There are a number of distro's made for netbooks. Might try a few of them.

I've done that before, but it really isn't a great way to work with these netbooks! Having a flashdrive poking out the side usually results in things going bellyup at the wrong moment when you accidently dislodge the the flashdrive that you booted from!.

But I agree that modding the AAO for a hard drvie is not something to be taken lightly.

jefro 09-21-2011 08:45 PM

True. Even the smallest have a bit of a nub sticking out.

m0nk3yb0y94 09-22-2011 04:23 AM

Thanks for all your advice guys.

Im not doing any modding to it as I dont wanna break it and have to spend more money on it, it was second hand anyway.

What kind of configuration? I dont know my technical terms so please be simple :)

I was also looking at using Lubuntu as i dont want to have to boot off a flash drive every time because knowing what im like id forget the flash drive.

Can anyone tell me step by step how to load a new os on to here?

Thanks everyone :)

fatmac 09-22-2011 06:11 AM

Re other Distros:-

What do you want to do with it?

Debian is good, it doesn't need to be geeky, it will 'just work'. A standard installation will give you the Gnome desktop environment, takes up about 3.7gb, & has just about everything an average user would want.

DamnSmallLinux is a very small distro (50mb) that will even run from ram (256mb min), can be installed 'frugally', which means it runs the same as it runs from cd/usb stick. Drawback is that it uses very small footprint, lightweight programs, but it can add in others as it runs.

Knoppix (cd version) should also work with 512mb ram, as long as you don't open lots of programs all at the same time. This can be put onto usb pendrives or hard disc, (probably takes up around 1.5~2gb).

rich_c 09-22-2011 07:00 AM

Really, your best bet is to Google Ubuntu (for example) install acer aspire one. You'll get quite a few hits for how-tos etc.

As others have mentioned, it'd probably be worth going for the LXDE version, i.e. Lubuntu. Or perhaps PeppermintOS might be worth a look.

I use it for using the internet (eg emails, facebook etc) and managing files from my external HDD to my phone like music and things to save messing about with booting up the desktop ;) pure lazy i know.

I know I have posted about this before but if I use the recovery flash drive on it will it restore it to like it was when it came out the box i.e setting user name and password etc

One Again thank you for all your help guys don't know what I'd do without ya :P

m0nk3yb0y94 09-22-2011 09:01 AM

I have just been looking around on google at guides on how to install a new Linux os and it looks really confusing as i only have a wireless connection and thats only a tether from my android 2.1 phone so will i still be able to change the os as this linpus lite is getting really boring

fatmac 09-22-2011 09:23 AM

Re your only connection.

Do you have somebody who can download a cd.iso for you?

They would need to burn it to a cdrom/cd-rw disc, use this disc to create a usb version, so that you could install from the pendrive.

Hi,
I,m running ubuntu 10.04.3 on an 8GB usb stick as a live OS with "persistence" and I'm only using 4GB of the stick , the other 4GB is extra space under /media if I get a bit full .
all the best

Indeed I have someone to download the iso for me she is doing it now for me, although trying to explain to the misses what its for is like talking to a brick wall haha.

But i have found a way to make the iso onto a usb stick to boot from so i can see how fast it would run, i a correct in saying i can do this?

I am going to try ubuntu netbook remix on it first to see how that performs :)

fatmac 09-22-2011 01:50 PM

I'm pretty sure you need to boot into the live cd to get to the option to create the usb stick; which you then try as a live system before using it to install to your machine.

i dont know but i found this on the ubuntu download page

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ubuntu/download

click create memory stick and thats what im going to try :)

fatmac 09-22-2011 02:06 PM

O.K.; you're going to use Ubuntu to get your usb stick. I don't use it so I can't comment on how they do it, I thought you were talking about Knoppix, which I do know a little bit about.

Regardless of distro you choose, yes, you should be able to get a good idea of it's suitability for you by booting the usb stick in live mode.

Good luck, & I hope it works out.

Thanks for the help :)

also i dont know the root password for this linpus lite will this be a problem for installing new distros?

Thank you to everyone on the thread :)

RockDoctor 09-22-2011 04:33 PM

Not knowing the root password will not be a problem if you want to install a new distro to your SSD. It should also be possible to boot off a live USB Flash drive and reset the Linpus root password (if you want to keep Linpus, which I strongly advise against).

I've got the AOA150 version of the ZG5; 1GB RAM/120GB HDD instead of 512MB RAM/8GB SSD as on your AOA110. My system multiboots Fedora and Ubuntu, both with LXDE desktops. Unlike Fedora, which just worked, Ubuntu used to require a small tweak to make it recognize cards inserted into the slots after booting; not sure if that's still necessary. Also, unlike Linpus, no other distro that I'm aware of will use an SD card in the left slot as a seemless extension of the SSD; rather, an SD card (in either slot) will be treated as a separate filesystem.

PTrenholme 09-22-2011 06:57 PM

After reading another post, I downloaded the Fuduntu live CD and installed it in a virtual system. It's intended for use on small systems, and worked fine for me. (Although I did give it a couple of GB RAM and a 32 GB drive, so my virtual system doesn't match you system requirements.)

The distribution is, essentially, Fedora 14 with some "Ubuntu" code added to make the user experience "smoother."

Not exactly! my experience with most LiveCD's or live usb running on this machine is that it runs a lot slower than it does once installed. Puppy Linux is the one exception because it loads entirely into ram. But puppy used to crash if I tried watching a movie when I only had 512M ram. :p

So basically if i booted it off a flash drive and it runs a little laggy, there is a slight chance if i install it it wont lag?

Got the GF to download 2 os's For me im gonna try ubuntu 9.04 netbook remix and peppermintos

hopefully ill like one of these 2 :)

sorry i am getting to the converstaion late but the fedora installer has an option to write the iso to a bootable usb (live-usb) even with persistant space.

i think unetbootn does the same thing.

that seems unnecessarily weird. so is it apt-get or yum (apt-yum/ yum-get) ?

I was talking about KNOPPIX cd version, not Fedora nor Ubuntu.

I cant give much information as I dont know what information you want.

All i know is that I've ran peppermint two on here off a usb stick and tried to connect to my android wi-fi tether (witch is my only internet connection) and it found the tether, I pressed connect, and there was just a little circle spinning around where the network icon is. does this mean I need the drivers?

Thanks

schneidz 09-24-2011 12:47 PM

the obvious questions are:
- does the laptop work with other wifi routers ?
- does your wifi router (evo) work with other laptops ?
(i suspect it is trying to connect but your fone isnt dhcp'ing correctly.)

these commands are to help us to know what your system thinks is installed (not necessarily to get you connected).
Code:

lspci # will tell us the pci devices you have in your system.
lsusb # will tell us the usb devices you have in your system.
lsmod # will list all the driver modules loaded in your system
ifconfig # will tell us what network interface cards you have turned on in your system.
ifconfig -a # will tell us all the network interface cards you have in your system.
iwconfig # will tell us which of your network interface cards has wireless capability
cat /etc/resolv.conf # will tell us what dns server you are using

now that we know that, this should get you connected:
Code:

sudo iwlist device scan # this will use the device interface (that from the above command, we found out has wireless capability) and scan for wireless routers that are accessible.
sudo iwconfig device essid "myssid" # assuming no security, use that device to connect to your router.
sudo dhclient # will attempt to get ip-address, subnet mask, dns server information automatically from your router assuming dhcp is turned on on your router.

instead of asking, why not just try ? also, are you able to answer the questions above so that we know whether the fone or the laptop is messed up ?
please copy-and-paste this line into a terminal; then copy-and-paste the output into your next reply (this diagnostic info will help us determine what type of hardware you have so we can assess your issue)

i would start another thread for that problem.

also, what was wrong with your linux mint install ? i guess i didnt make it perfectly clear but since you stated that your wifi card works with other wireless access points then it is obvious to me that the wireless card in the laptop is working but your android phone's wireless tether is not working (you never mention what model/ service you have).

Guessing its a big problem then ?

I love the peppermint linux i have been using off my memory stick but i just havent got around to instaling it onto my netbook yet. And yes the wireless card does work as it will connect to other networks just not my phone witch is Motorola Defy, Android 2.1, T-Mobile.

schneidz 09-30-2011 09:36 AM

and just to be perfectly comprehensive, does that phone's wireless tether work with any other laptop ?

hmm, i dont have experience with android fones. can you try connecting to your network and pinging stuff like:
192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1
192.168.1.0
192.168.0.0
64.235.229.141
www.02144.com

can you copy down the ip addresses for stuff like (gateway, dns, ip, network mask) from a working computer ?

else, i am stumped.

edit: i shouldve asked for this before but can you please show us the output for this command:
Code:

route -n
maybe someone will be able to decipher it.
and the outside chance your firewall is preventing access please show us the output of:
Code:

sudo iptables -L -n
