But it also sounds to me like the drive itself is marginal. Replacement dvd drives are pretty cheap these days.

I booted 3 times in Win10 without a CD inserted the DVD drive appeared in File explorer and when
I inserted a CD I could read it
So I took the Computer apart and Re Seated the cables
Amazingly the DVD now works correctly in Ubuntu
Time will tell .!!
