CD in DVD drive sometimes not detected
I have an acer Aspire-AXC-605-ER30 Desktop with ubuntu 12.04
Sometimes my CD in the DVD drive is detected and sometimes not. If it is not detected, I have to re-boot and it may then be detected. When it is not detected it does not appear in lshw ,sudo blkid or in hwinfo --block --short It works well in Windows 8 so must be a software problem in ubuntu 12.04 |
Try removing and inserting again.

When it is not detected, did you just push the button to remove the prior one, without unmounting it?
|
In typical distro if it is detected then it is also would have mounted. So if it's not detected then you can push the drive button. Also pushing drive button won't do much harm as cd/dvd is read only. Also typically once mounted pushing the button doesn't ejects the cd/dvd. You have to unmount it first. In some cases pushing would eject cd/dvd even if mounted. Also when using cd/dvd rw in packet writing mode ejecting without mounting would be disasterous.

Pushing eject buton and re-inserting does not work.Only re-booting
works(sometimes). AS for LinuxUser42 question This happens if I boot with a disk in place(sometimes) |

pouldney try just logging out and back in and see if it see's it then? IMHE, Linux is more apt to see a hardware problem, before Windows. The reboot thing is a Windows thinking thing, try just logging out first and then things like using a terminal and going to see if you can cd to the /media drive (where you could list the contents). |
Usually typing the word "eject" will throw a error message if it won't eject the disk.

This is a very common problem I've run into across all different distros and hardware. I've never found a "fix", but you can always jump out to the command line and force a mount from /dev/cdrom to say, /mnt and then browse to /mnt.
|
Several possible additional things to try:
Test the dick in another computer. Make sure the disk is clean on the "read" (silver or unprinted) side. Clean the optical drive. |
Yes it may be that cd/dvd drive is defective. And also if there is dust/matter in lens of cd/dvd drive this happens. You can try cleaning the lens of cd/dvd drive or do it with a service man. Just open the cd/dvd drive and gently wipe gently the lens with a dry soft cloth. Reassemble and check.

I did some more investigation on this problem.
I noticed that the cd was not detected on the first boot of the day. So this morning I booted first in Windows8 ,and the disk was not detected in windows!! So now it seems it is a cd/dvd drive problem,Perhaps it needs to "warm up" |
I still have this problem after updating to ubuntu 14.04
It seems if I boot with a CD in the drive it is detected but if I insert a CD after boot it will not detect the cd or the drive |
It looks as if your optical drive is on the way out -- I typically find they just stop working properly for no apparent reason.

The disk always works under windows so I do not think it is the drive
