Use of channel in ad hoc mode

ad hoc mode behaviour

1. I have configured 2 wireless linux devices in adhoc mode on 2.4 (channel 1) => verified link is up and devices can ping each other.

2. Changed channel number to 165 in device1, pinging each other got paused.

3. Waited 15 mins. After 15mins
a) Sometimes, device2 can ping device1, device2 IP got changed.
b) Few times, device2 and device1 can ping each other(i.e. both IP unchanged), Not sure if both recreated another network.

Preliminary investigations says both devices are still communicating with channel 1, instead of channel 165.

What is expected behaviour here?
1) should both communicate with channel 1?
2) should both communicate with channel 165?
3) should both stop communicating and tear down the network?
4) should both stop communicating and tear down the network and create another network?
5) if they are recreating a network, what's the channel number should be?

Please help me here to judge the behaviour.

I am using 2.6.39 kernel and wpa_supplicant-0.6.10.

Thanks,
Kantanu
