Question Static IP on client vs static lease on DHCP server

I'm having a heck of a problem getting static IP assignment working on ubuntu 12.04.4 server. I just need to make sure that it always has the same IP.

Is it acceptable to keep it as DHCP and make the router auto assign the IP based on the hostname/computer name - this being a static lease.

Is this a decent alternative or am I missing something?

Or the mac address, if your machine isn't Irish.
