maximizing static IP potential

I want to subscribe to a static IP with my ISP to be able to run FTP and VNC from home. With one static IP adress, how can I (if possible) manage that one static IP in a way that it covers both FTP and VNC ? Forward at different ports ? Ill use dyndns by the way.

My reason for asking is that it gets more expensive if I have to subscribe to 2 static IP addresses..

What do you mean? You can run both FTP and VNC on the same machine - they use different ports.

However, running VNC over the public Internet is a very bad idea as it's unencrypted.

VNC traffic will be tunneled over VPN. Thanks for the ports advice.

What do you recon is best, use the static IP for the router, or use it for the PC itself ? By "best" I mean in terms of network performance:)

In terms of "Best" I would go with what "works"

Typically, you would need to set the Router to use the static IP Address, and set port forwarding on the Router.

Amendment:
You could configure the PC to use the static IP Address, bypassing the Router, but I don't see that you would get much of a performance gain. If you have multiple machines accessing the internet, they would need to use your machine as a gateway.

For some reason I thought I could use either. Will set up router with the static IP. Thanks for the advice
