How are you starting the connection?
(GUI interface, command line etc)
The dialler usually is wvdial
chat is used for the modem control initially.

Peter

I thought chat was the dialer, i'll have another look for a dialer i don't think i have wvdial installed i add it and try it out thanks, i'm starting the connection with the diald menu item in the KDE->utilities->debian-> menu

read up on and am now using wvdial from a shell in kde2 it now dials, and connects properly but when i start mozilla or simalar it dosen't communicate with the connection

From a command line, type route and see that it has added a default route out of the box.
