Cannot get Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g to connect w/ Ubuntu 9.10.
 
Hi!

This is my 2nd day working with Ubuntu 9.10. I can't get my wireless connection to access the net. Below is all of the information I have. Let me know if you need anything else. Your help would be greatly appreciated!

I think the dmesg that you posted is not complete. I do not see anywhere were the wl.ko is loaded into the kernel. There should (unless someone fiddled with it) be a message about how this taints the kernel. I do see that it is getting loaded tho. I wonder if its set to access point mode or something tho since it is not showing up correctly when you do a iwconfig.

But your wireless perfectly works. It is not Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g problems.

I stated at the outset "I can't get my wireless connection to access the net." Don't know how I could have been any clearer.

As far as the Network Manager is concerned, it automatically connects me to Nexus but I'm not able to connect to the net. I'm working on implementing minrich's suggestion. I'll be back to post the results soon.

Oddly enough, I re-enabled encryption on my router and my Network Manager was able to, once again, discover all available wireless networks but I still can't connect to the internet wirelessly. What's next?

Here is a magic potion:

You could try bringing, as root, the wlan0 interface down and then up:

# ifdown wlan0

# ifup wlan0

# iwconfig wlan0

# iwlist wlan0 scan

# ifconfig -a

NB the first command may fail - don't worry about it - it just clears the ifstate
the second command brings it up, the third command should show the essid (access point name) you are connected to, the fourth scans for all aps within range, and the fifth shows what IP address your wlan0 interface is linked to and whether it is transmitting and receiving.


Your pastebin dump shows that the scan worked fine with encryption off.

nimnull22 - I ahd to think about your post for a while .... but M's post says that his network manager (god bless them all) doesn't see anything whilst we see a sucessful scan and know that the wlan0 interface is up and working but not connected/connecting to the Nexus access point.

the iwconfig eth2 output shows that you are connected to the right access point 00:22:57:1F:E9:CF which is the Nexus MAC address see your scan output Cell2.

However you have put encryption back 'on' on the nexus router and we haven't got there yet.

If you reset the encryption to open, then try in a browser to open http://192.168.1.1 you should wirelessly connect to the router admin / password page. we'll progress from there if you are successful. Incidentally, there is tons of traffic going through eth2 1.6MB received and 108.8KB transmitted according to the output of sudo ifconfig -a

I couldn't connect to http://192.168.1.1 from my machine so I had to use my windows desktop to disable Nexus' encryption protocols. Once completed, I tried to connect to http://192.168.1.1 from my laptop and was unable to do so. Tried to do it wired and wirelessly. Same result.

well your route output shows the correct info but for eth4 whereas ifconfig is set to eth2, I am reading the route man page as I type and will post my suggestions on how to edit your routing table - it is a problem I haven't encountered before, but it does explain why your laptop won't connect with encryption on or off.

I suggest you take a look at man route in the meantime

To have ability to go out from wireless INTERFACE should be eth2

So

But this will work ONLY if his GW= 192.168.1.1.

To find it out OP, please connect to your router (no important how) and type from root console
dhcpcd -T eth0 (if you connect through ethernet)
dhcpcd -T eth2 (if you connect through wireless)

should, I think, change the output of route -n to what we want

run route -n and see what comes out, I am not going to experiment on my machine since it is my only way of connecting to LQ.


If the effect of these changes is correct you can try to reach http://192.168.1.1 AGAIN.

Encryption Technique: TKIP

Yes, and had to set password, I assume. Right.
So in Network Manager you have to choose the same encryption method and set the same password.

Can you check all of this.

Same encryption method and key. Still can't connect to the net.

Incidentally, Synaptic tells me that I have wpasupplicant version 0.6.9-3ubuntu1 already installed.

install wicd

It will fix your wpa_supplicant issues garenteed

WICD installed; version 1.6.1-3ubuntu1. It tells me that I'm connected to Nexus but I'm still unable to connect to the net. What's next?

Send please output for:
route -n

There's no output when I run route -n because I can't maintain my connection to Nexus. It connects and then a few seconds later, it loses it.
