Tried this question in the Mint forum with no response.
My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5736Z with Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500M. With Mint 14 Mate, Mint has no trouble finding my TV connected to the HDMI output on the laptop. However, updating to Mint 16, Mint is not able to detect the HDMI output / TV. I've seen this with other debian - based distros as well. Since the update to Wheezy most distros don't seem to want to detect anything connected to the HDMI output with this particular laptop. But Mint 14 works just fine with it.
One more detail: in order to get Linux Mint 14 to get HDMI to work correctly, I need to enter this cheat code at boot time: xdrvr=intel
So, what's different between Mint 14 and 16 that changes the behavior of HDMI with Intel video cards?
Probably the xorg driver is different. Xorg may be selecting the wrong driver in the newer Mint, and that's why you need the xdrvr=intel. You could also just create an xorg.conf and make it use the intel driver that way.

Try making sure the TV is turned on and fully booted/powered up before booting your computer.
