Sound on an old laptop

Sometime last night, my sound stopped working. All the controls (I can find) say that it is on, but nothing comes out. Yes, it's an old laptop (Sony Vaio PCG-FXA36) but everything has been working fine. I'm running Xubuntu Koala. My speaker icon in the taskbar has a little red x on it, but hovering over it displays "63%"... Opening it (left click) brings up the Mixer, which says it is NOT muted and is set for 100%.

Do I have the wrong mixer? It currently says it is running the VIA 82C686A/B Rev 50 (Alsa Mixer).

I've been having some problems lately on my Debian box that requires me to run alsaconf as root at times to get the sound working again. It all seems to have started when I updated to the latest flash player. Maybe you're having a similar problem.

I'll try that. I have managed to get my speakers to work, but the config I had to use to do that does not have a control for the microphone.
