Another "Please help me chose a distro" thread but for a Dell Latitude D800
Hello all, I've got a Dell Latitude D800 that is being passed down to a nephew to use for school. But unfortunately, my initial choice, Lubuntu, will not work due to PAE.
System specs:
Pentium M 1.7GHz
512MB ram
NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200
Also, if possible, I would like the distro to be easily maintained (though I won't mind a bit of initial work if it mains less work in the long term).
The issue with your system is ram. A low resource distro is needed or a very lightweight distro.
Lubuntu offers a non-pae version.
You really need to try some of the versions to see if you like it.
Was hoping to get the latest long term release if possible as I really like and already use Lubuntu on other systems. Would increasing the ram help? Other than that, guess I'll try looking around a bit more first. Thanks.
It wouldn't hurt I'd think. If you are sure about the PAE then that may limit a few choices. There still are a number of distro's targeted towards these type of systems and some are pretty good. You won't be able to run latest and greatest in 64 bit.
Places like distrowatch may offer selections that you can try. Other web pages may have choices. Others have good ideas but here are a few that may work. Antix, Arch, Debian, BSD's, Puppy, slack, slitaz, menuetos and many others.
@EDDY1: Thanks, that helps with identifying the type of ram I need.
@jefro: Thanks, though some of the distro's you listed I believe are a little too advanced for who this laptop is intended for. I'm going to try a couple of them and if I remember I'll post the results.
