Weekly Hardware Poll, January 5th: What Chip are you buying next?
 

Looks like the weekly Hardware Poll turned into the Monthly Hardware Poll. Sorr y about the two missing polls, I was put down with a bad case of Flu followed up by the knockout punch of the Holidays.

We're going to wander back to basics with the fourth installment here.

Every geek I know is always planning their next machine within a few months of building their last one. So, let's talk chips. If you were out to buy today, what would it be? Don't think in the fantasyland of if money was a joke. Really, what would you be buying if you were simply in your normal market? And most imporantly, why?

Okay, I'm a hardware idiot. But I am thinking about a faster processor for the heck of it. Intel and AMD are the only options for me from the above and I hate the idea I'm using today's version of a 286 so I pretend this 64-bit business doesn't exist. Don't see the need for it. Plus all the Palladium crap - and Opteron's on board with that, too, apparently - not just Intel. So that basically leaves me with a faster AMD - Intel's fine by default but if I'm *just* picking a chip on my own, it'd be AMD. I've never had anything but Intel or totally weird stuff, until this box with an AMD and I like it. So a fast Athlon XP. Which my mobo will support, besides.

But I really have no business posting on this thread. It just interested me. Look forward to reading the discussion. :)

i am not going for any CISC prosessor this time. the next processor i buy, it must be a RISC-class.

And I want something silent & low-watts :}

I'll be getting a Nehemia machine!

And if I had lots and lots of cash - a Dual Opteron ;)

I admit it, I like super pretty pictures to go along with my command line. So I would get a PPC970 machine though the manufacturer of the whole machine would more likely dub it "G5". This would give me an opportunity to run that hyped up MacOSX along side my linux so, as well as get me into a 64-bit environment. That and architecture wise I just think the Power4/PPC970 stuff is a whole lot better then x86/x86-64.

and mostly, really, honestly, it's because with AMD i can make the move to 64-bit that Intel isn't ready for, and with Linux i can compile my software for it right away, which Microsoft isn't ready for.

i know there are limitations, and lots of reasons why it only makes a small difference, but it's the cutting edge, you know?
