TV Tuners

I want to get away from satellite or cable TV. I have assembled a new computer with an AMD CPU, 4g memory and a 2t hard drive, and a nvidia one gig video card. The video card has an hdmi out slot. I have an outdoor antenna and am subscribed to both netflix and hulu plus. I have installed Ubuntutv 14.04. (I believe this is the same or similar to myth tv).

I have an old WinTV-PVR usb2. It is a Hauppage model 941. Would this work with the system I have described above.Or, is there a better option for me?

I have about 300+ dvd's I plan to load onto the hard drive. I have installed "Handbrake" for this.

Any recomendations on how to better this system would be greatly appreciated. This computer will be pretty much dedicated to TV usage.

It looks like the 941 is analog so unless you have a digital converter the TV tuner will not work with broadcast TV. I'm not familiar with all the TV tuner models so I can not suggest what would be best.

I'm assuming your keeping some type of broadband internet service for Hulu and streaming Netflix?

I'll agree that the tuner is analog NTSC. While there are a few channels still on NTSC, you'd be better off going to antennaweb or rabbitears or tvfool for channels in your local area. Pretty sure you'll find common channels have all gone to ATSC so a newer tuner would be needed.

It will take forever ripping the 300 dvd's. I was using a dual quad core xeon server with 32 G ram to rip them and was kind of slow.

One way to find out is put the card in place on the mobo and see if your distro see's it-
Depending on what version of the kernel your distribution is using it should provide a module/driver for the card you mentioned.

If your up for a new purchase this TV card is compatible with Linux.

Hope that helps-

Good luck!
